Premiering new music at Jazz Upstairs

On September 27 I’ll be joined by my quartet to reopen Jazz Upstairs’ concert series and premier some new works that I’ve written as part of my master’s research into composition. The music for this performance has been developed especially for this quartet of improvisers and is designed to be freely reorganised in real-time during the performance using musical cues. These new compositions are part of a body of work being developed this group that promotes an improvisational approach to composition and a compositional approach to improvisation.

Also performing on the night will be Abbreviations Workshop, an amorphous come-one-come-all group that aims to spontaneously arrange Andrew Garton’s specially constructed compositions to create performances that are uniquely suited to each ensemble and performance context. In this fascinating format, the each player is presented with all the compositional material and the band spontaneously uses these elements to construct a large scale work that is faithful to the composition but also shaped by the contributing musicians.
